New Cookery Classes For All Ages

The Hackney School of Food, a new state of the art cookery hub in north-east London, has introduced a whole range of cooking experiences ready for the new year.  ‘Bubble & Feast’, ‘Essential Cookery Skills’ and a ‘Children's Cook-a-long’ are among a series of new in-person and online cooking courses, which start from £20pp.

All funds raised help the school and the charity, Chefs in Schools to improve the health of children by transforming food education and school food.  Primary school children have already been enjoying a seed to spoon food education at this state of the art cooking hub in Hackney. It opened earlier this year and is a collaboration  between the LEAP Federation and Chefs in Schools - designed by architects Surman Weston.

Together they transformed a disused school building and underused grounds into a garden with vegetable beds, orchards, soft fruit areas and a greenhouse, as well as a purpose built cookery classroom. Here, children learn to grow fruit and vegetables, tend beehives, cook over fire and turn produce into meals.

The kitchen can be used comfortably by five-year-old children as well adults, with height-adjustable cooking and washing stations.  It provides food education to the LEAP Federation schools, lessons to pupils from across London and free cooking classes to the local community. It also functions as a training hub for school chefs.

NEW COURSES AT HACKNEY SCHOOL OF FOOD
Ideal for Christmas gifts, vouchers are available for specific classes or with a monetary value.  The vouchers are available to purchase online here from today (27 November). The courses begin January and run throughout 2021.

Bubble & Feast
Offering family ‘bubbles’ of up to five people a way to learn and cook together, and to enjoy a shared experience around food.  Families work as a team alongside Head Food Educator Tom to create a sumptuous feast of Sourdough Pizza, Sushi or Thai Green Curry, learning simple tips and tricks along the way.  Dinner is served in the impressive surroundings of the School of Food’s Kitchen & Gardens. The on-site class lasts 3 hours and costs £250 per group, inclusive of all ingredients, instruction and dinner.

The Children’s Cook-a-long
At Hackney School of Food, the mission is to inspire and excite children about good food, where it comes from and how to cook it. The best way to do this is to get in the kitchen and cook delicious, nutritious food together. Available either in-person or online, the Children’s Cook-a-long course does just that, teaching kids how to make Pizza, Mexican Chicken Wraps and Spaghetti Meatballs. It’s suitable for those aged over 7 and an adult must be present. (£22 virtual, £40 in-person for adult and child)

Friday Night Fun
And not just the school kids who get to have all the fun. Adult-only classes enable you to socialise either in-person (maximum of 5 in a group) or virtually with friends in a cook-a-long. Chefs guide you through recipes from scratch, to create a fabulous meal. (Online 1hr = £25; In person 2 hours - £50pp)

Essential Cookery Skills 6 Week Masterclass
The school will also offer an ‘Essential Cookery Skills 6 Week Masterclass’ course (£250). Aiming to get people cooking with confidence, the informal yet informative lessons will cover the provenance and quality of ingredients, basic nutritional information, as well as professional level skills and techniques - from baking bread to deboning a chicken. The 2-hour masterclasses will run every week over 6 weeks, or you can book in for individual sessions (£60).
