Winter Wellbeing Escapes at Broughton Sanctuary: From Family Gatherings to Festive Getaways

Embrace winter with a restorative wellbeing break at Broughton Sanctuary in the Yorkshire Dales, combining cosy indoor comforts with invigorating outdoor experiences. Unwind with spa therapies at the Avalon Wellbeing Centre, explore rewilding trails on crisp winter walks, and gather by the fireside for festive feasting. Hire Broughton Hall - as seen in the new Netflix series House of Guinness - for a multi-gen reunion, or retreat to one of the beautifully restored holiday homes, set across the 2,500-acre estate.

A Season of Rest and Renewal

Broughton’s winter wellbeing programming highlights purposeful rest, alignment and nourishment. Guests can book exclusive use of the on-site Avalon Wellbeing Centre, with its Pool Suite (steam room, sauna, pool, floatation tank, and gym), alongside restorative sessions - from Yin Yoga to crystal bowl sound healing to Somadome meditation pod - designed to restore body and mind.

Across the wider estate there’s Wild Wellbeing experiences to reconnect with both ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ natures: mindful Forest Bathing sessions, open-water swimming, foraging for seasonal woodland ingredients, and time outdoors exploring by bike or on foot. Then warm up in the woodland sauna, traditional sweat lodge, outdoor hot tub, or beside a campfire.

Rewilded Winter

The Odyssey Trail – five interconnected loops through Broughton’s nature restoration project, flourishing woodlands and historical landmarks – offers sweeping mountain views on clear days and is a meditative way to decompress between festive gatherings. Broughton Sanctuary is also home to one of the UK’s leading rewilding efforts: more than 320,000 trees have been planted in the last three years, including one of England’s largest tree-planting schemes in 2021.

Home for the Holidays

Dating back to 1597, Broughton Hall sleeps up to 32 guests in 15 double bedrooms and two singles within the main Hall, along with two wing apartments offering five additional bedrooms. Each room has its own character and design, making the Hall a fitting setting for festive gatherings, multi-generational celebrations, or an atmospheric New Year’s Eve house party. Its cinematic backdrop has already been captured on screen in Gentleman Jack, All Creatures Great and Small, the 2022 Brontë biopic Emily starring Emma Mackey. Most recently, Broughton Hall appeared as a filming location in Netflix’s brand-new series House of Guinness, with episode four showcasing the Hall’s conservatory and gardens as the Guinness estate, St. Anne’s.

Feasting Together

At Christmas, Broughton Hall transforms into a place of warmth and togetherness, with fires lit, halls dressed, and long tables set for celebratory feasts. Guests can indulge in a festive menu featuring dishes such as Salt-Aged Sirloin of Beef and Turkey Breast with Truffle Yorkshire Puddings and Pigs in Blankets, or choose from lighter, wellbeing-inspired alternatives crafted from organic seasonal, estate-sourced produce. Think roasted winter vegetables with wild herbs, nourishing broths, or plant-forward dishes that celebrate balance alongside indulgence.

To welcome in the New Year, the Hall becomes a spectacular backdrop with music, dancing, and midnight feasting that can be tailored to each group – from gourmet celebratory banquets to wellness-conscious menus that set the tone for a fresh start.
