Mark Cocker at Broughton Sanctuary on Saturday 8th July

"Broughton Sanctuary is really excited to invite the community to share in our nature recovery journey, and Mark Cocker offers a fabulous opportunity for people to come and learn about our native wildlife."Kelly Hollick, Project Manager, Broughton Sanctuary

On 8th July, Broughton Sanctuary in Yorkshire invites you to join the conversation around its nature recovery project and share in the journey, at a special event led by one of Britain’s foremost naturalists and widely acclaimed authors: ‘Mark Cocker: A Deep Encounter with Nature.’

Three years into its ambitious Rewilding programmeBroughton Sanctuary is fast becoming one of the most important centres for nature in northern England. Located in the stunning Yorkshire countryside, Broughton is home to one of the UK’s leading nature recovery projects with over 350,000 trees - including 15 native broadleaves - planted in the last three years, which equated to the biggest tree planting scheme in England in 2021.

The day’s events include a morning nature walk and evening talk. It’s possible to book the events individually or together - please note that spaces are limited.

A Walk on the Wilder Side of Broughton: 10am - 12pm
Together with Mark Cocker, spend the morning exploring the animals and plants that live at Broughton, now one of the most transformative rewilding projects in England. The session begins by examining the (live) contents of the Sanctuary’s moth trap, set the night before. Its sleeping inmates are never predictable and the contents at this time of the year are often remarkable and stunningly beautiful.

Then the group will head out into the wider landscape to look for birds, insects, trees, plants, fungi - everything that calls this agricultural landscape home. Examine why they live here and how wildlife adjusts to increased sunlight and the higher temperatures of summer, and learn how all these different animals and plants work as a community*.

One Midsummer's Day - An Evening with Mark Cocker: 7pm
In the evening, Mark Cocker will speak on his new work One Midsummer's Day: Swifts and the Story of Life on Earth. The book is in part a celebration of one of the most charismatic migrant birds. It is also an exploration of the profound interconnections that underpin the whole living planet.

Mark considers this to be his most important book and the whole day promises to be a deep immersion into the importance of nature and its relevance to all our lives.
